Peru Travel Guide

Regions and Major Cities Climates

In general terms, Peru can be divided into three large geographic regions: the coast, the highlands (Andes), and the jungle (Amazon Rainforest), but if we study the country’s ecology a little closer, we see there are at least 11 different eco-regions with their own climate, ecosystems, wildlife and, not to mention, unique marvels and surprises.

Coast

Costa

The coast occupies a narrow strip of desert washed by the Pacific Ocean. It is crossed by about 50 fertile valleys where settled major cities.

Sierra

Sierra

The Sierra, or Andes, has a rugged, marked by the presence of the great Andes mountains traversing the country from north to south and reaches heights of over 6.000 meters. (19.685 feet). In the mountains there are numerous valleys and deep canyons, hundreds of lakes and massive glaciers of extraordinary beauty.

Selva

Selva

The eastern section of the country almost two thirds of it is occupied by the Amazon jungle with two major variants: the cloud forest, located in the foothills of the eastern flank of the mountain, and the vast Amazon basin, covered by a myriad ada rivers that wind through lush forests full of wildlife.
