Travel tips

  • Peruvian food is extraordinary and diverse. When at a restaurant, don’t be shy and ask your waiter/waitress what they would recommend. Also, don’t eat large meals when staying in mountainous zones. For some people, the food may be extremely spicy or seasoned, so keep that in mind when ordering.
  • If you don’t wish to carry the souvenirs you purchased with you throughout your entire visit and you have some extra time in Lima before leaving for home, then make your purchases at any of the souvenir shops there. You will find an excellent selection of the best handicrafts.
  • Peru runs on 220 volts, though most 4 and 5 star hotels are equipped to handle 110 volts.
  • Peruvian tap water may be treated differently from your country, so we recommend you drink bottled water.
  • Taxis in Peru do not use meters, so before entering the vehicle you should ask about the price and negotiate it accordingly. If you are going to take a taxi, we suggest you use a reputable taxi company or ask the hotel or restaurant staff to flag you down a trustworthy taxi.
  • You should be aware that weather in mountain cities (Cusco, Puno, Arequipa, etc.) is unpredictable and may turn extreme. We recommend you wear layers of clothing so you can adjust appropriately to the change in temperature and winds while at the different destinations.
Tips to help minimize altitude sickness
People react differently to changes in altitude, so we offer these recommendations that you may find helpful:
  • Rest for a couple of hours right after you arrive.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, like Gatorade or Powerade.
  • Hotels provide you free of charge an herbal tea called mate de coca, a traditional beverage that helps the body acclimate faster.
  • Don’t overeat and try to eat more carbohydrates.
  • Walk at a measured pace.
  • Plan your itinerary so you will gradually ascend to the highest altitudes.

FAQ’s
  • How will we be identified once we have arrived at the airport?

A uniformed and identified Viajes Pacifico representative will await you at the international terminal reception area where you will be directed to go after collecting your luggage. The individual will be holding up a sign with your name or the group’s.

  • Once we have been contacted by the representative, will we have to show a coupon or voucher?

No, all you have to do is identify yourself. Our personnel will have the necessary documents on hand that list the services you have purchased, which helps avoid any uncomfortable situation and streamlines your arrival.

  • What type of assistance will I receive upon arrival?

International flights Viajes Pacifico offers include a representative who will help you with your luggage, check to see if your entrance papers are in order, and hand you a document pack with a detailed itinerary, luggage tags, and other useful forms. Additionally, the individual will give you a brief introduction of the city, provide a concise summary of the program, and reiterate useful tips that will make your stay more comfortable.

  • Will I need to show a coupon or voucher for each service?

No. In order to serve you more efficiently, we have coordinated all services in advance, having sent all necessary coupons electronically to our suppliers as a means of avoiding loss, reducing unneeded printing (which is part of our environmental protection policy), and maximizing your experience by relieving you of that concern. So, just relax and enjoy the trip.

  • Why do I have to show my identification and immigration form when registering at the hotel?

When registering, you need to show your identification card or passport with the immigration stamp on it as well as your Andean Immigration Card so the hotel can make a copy of them; these will be used as supporting documentation to exonerate you from paying the 19% general sales tax. Our quotes do not include this tax to non-resident foreigners whose stay does not exceed 90 consecutive days.
